Impact of Manufacturing on the Construction Industry | On-demand webinar

Globally, in our modern world, our better understanding of the impact of traditional working methods across different industries on the environment, society and the world economy clearly demonstrates that we cannot continue as we have done in the past. But what is Impact of Manufacturing on the Construction Industry?

manufacturing and constructionSince the start of the new millennium, we have endured one of the worst economic crises the world has ever seen, declared an environmental emergency, and suffered from the most devastating pandemic in recent times. These three events alone have caused us to rethink and reevaluate how we live and operate.

The Impact of Manufacturing on the Construction Industry

Where some industries have been left crippled and on the brink of extinction, others have thrived and adapted to new ways of working by harnessing modern technologies. “Doing more with less” is a common theme found in both the manufacturing and construction industries, but how is this happening and what knowledge and lessons are being learned and shared between the two industries?

In this webinar, we shall explore these three questions; How are manufacturing processes changing the construction industry? What new technologies are being adopted? What are the benefits and how do they combat the challenges we face?

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand and appreciate the need for change
  • The challenges the construction industry faces
  • What technologies are commonly found in both the manufacturing and construction industries
  • What has construction learned from the manufacturing industry to help tackle these challenges.

Autodesk Revit – 3 Ways to Schedule Floor Areas #techtuesday

#Techtuesday

In this video we are going to look at three different ways you can capture areas within a Revit project.
So here we have a set of apartments, we have separate types of units, separate apartments and within those different rooms and room sizes.

So I’m just going to show you 3 different ways to capture floor areas and room areas within a Revit project.

Setting up Floor Areas in Revit with Room Tags

So the first way you would capture floor areas is by using a room tag, simply just going to your architecture tab and just dropping in your room tags. So what we will do is load in a tag, so we’re going to start dropping in rooms here. and you just click in the room and the walls of the apartment are defined as room bounding. So can just place a room in each room and it will find the binding wall within each of those elements.
So I am going to select this particular room and it shows me the floor area of that room and if I in fact select one of these walls it shows me that this particular wall is room bounding. So that means if I were to disable room bounding the floor area would not be found by using that wall, it would probably spill into the next room. So that’s how you create a very simple room area using room tags.

Setting up Floor Areas in Revit with Place Spaces

That’s one way of doing it, another way you can also do it and this may be slightly non-conventional. You can use something called space tags, which are primarily used in MEP models and will be used extensively by MEP engineers and modellers on a BIM project but the reason that you might use them is if I go to analyse, so here I can place spaces. Spaces are separate to rooms, you can interlink them to a degree, whereas if you create rooms you can them to recreate as a space but to place spaces, the reason I use spaces is to associate with individual apartments or houses, is because when you place them, they have slightly different properties. So we can start placing these spaces in here and we have a series of spaces created.

Now what I can do with a space that I cannot do with a room is that you can create something called zones. Zones allow you to collate a series of spaces into a single zone. I going to go to edit zone, add a space, so what I’m going to do is multiple select all of these spaces that I have placed. So I am going to be able to associate these with each apartment because they are in a single zone. So you see if I hover over here, it won’t allow me to add a room tag to the zone, so you can’t use room tags within the zone, they are completely independent. So you can see when I hover over here now it gives me all of the space tags that have been placed. If I come to the lefthand side here I can look at the schedules. So if I go into my schedule on the left-hand side I’ve got a room schedule. So my room schedule, we will turn on the names and numbers of the room schedule. So then you can see all the rooms that have been placed in here. It only contains the rooms, not the spaces because when you create a space schedule it is separate to a room schedule. So we have a space schedule here and we can see all the spaces here. So these are all associated with a zone. The apartment number could be the zone for example.

So if I now want to place another zone within a separate apartment and give it a number, go to analyse, go to space and drop in the spaces and then create a zone of those spaces. Select all of the individual spaces, it will automatically give it a new number. and it will sort it into different spaces. And I can rename the spaces accordingly. Once named we can sort the list by zone and separate it into different apartments.

Be aware that then when adding all the rooms together it will only measure the rooms not the interconnecting spaces and partitions.

Setting up Floor Areas in Revit with Space Tags

The third way is to use space tags. Go to the architecture tag. I’m going to create an area plan. So this creates a separate plan view, whilst allowing you to place separate boundary lines. So I can choose the same floor plan. I’m going to go into area boundary and it’s going to let me select separate area boundaries. So you can apply the area rules,or you can get it to lock to the individual walls.

So I am going to select an external wall, and we are only going to capture the internal floor area of the apartment. If any of these walls move, as we’ve locked those particular lines, they will move with each of those walls. On the left, it has created a separate area plan. What I can now do is create an area schedule for that apartment. I need to place an area tag in here too. I can place my area tag and it gives me the total area of all of those external boundaries. This is separate to space and room tags. With this information, you can then export the total size area information of the design. This will export as a .txt file and you can do the same with the space schedule and the same with the room schedule.

To summarise

– you can create a separate area plan
– you can create a room schedule with independent room tags
– or you can create a space schedule and place that on a zone

AutoCAD Web App

AutoCAD 2022 and the AutoCAD web and mobile apps give you a connected design experience. You gain the flexibility to design and draft in AutoCAD on desktop, web, and mobile devices. You can now share and markup DWG files in the web and mobile apps. And with the AutoCAD web app you can now upload drawing templates, plot styles, and other support files to create DWG files that better meet your company’s drafting standards.
In addition to connecting across devices, with AutoCAD 2022, you can connect to other products within the Autodesk ecosystem.

With new Push to Autodesk Docs, you can publish your drawings from AutoCAD to Autodesk Docs and with the AutoCAD web app, you can now connect to files stored in Autodesk Docs and Autodesk Drive. This enables smoother workflows and file sharing between AutoCAD 2022 and other Autodesk products. It doesn’t stop there. AutoCAD also connects to leading cloud storage providers including Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, Box, and Dropbox.

TRACE AUTOCADStreamline drawing review cycles with Trace in AutoCAD 2022

Trace improves digital collaboration, letting you work with collaborators on any device. You and your collaborators can markup DWG files without altering the existing drawing. Your collaborators, for example, can create a Trace in the web or mobile app and mark up design changes they want to see. The Trace can then be opened in AutoCAD on desktop, where you can automatically see the feedback in the context of the DWG file and incorporate the changes. It’s a multiplatform digital workflow that lets you collaborate with your team wherever they are and streamlines the drawing review cycle.

Improve your collaboration process with Share in AutoCAD 2022

With Share, you can now securely share your drawings with your team and colleagues directly from AutoCAD. Using Share, you can select levels of access, such as “view-only” or “edit,” and send controlled copies of drawings to your team. You can generate Share links from AutoCAD and the AutoCAD web app. And the links open directly in the AutoCAD web app. Share gives you more control and is a secure way to digitally collaborate with your team anytime, anywhere.

Increase accuracy through automation with Count in AutoCAD 2022

Today’s work demands continuous innovation, and it’s all about automation. Count automates the counting of blocks or geometry to save you time and reduce errors. You can export data to a dynamic table and get updates quickly. By cutting down on manual counting, you can avoid miscounting parts or ordering incorrect quantities. Count saves an immense amount of time by eliminating the block counting exercises within the drawing while removing human errors.

Improve efficiency with Push to Autodesk Docs

Push to Autodesk Docs improves workflow efficiency within the Autodesk ecosystem by allowing you to publish CAD drawing sheets as PDFs directly from AutoCAD to Autodesk Docs. You no longer need to save PDFs locally, open a web browser, or upload the sheets to the cloud.

View and edit multiple drawings at the same time with Floating windows

You asked for a way to view and edit multiple drawings at the same time in a single instance of AutoCAD—with the new Floating windows, you can. Floating windows is a game-changer for your work. It lets you conveniently pull away drawing tabs to view them as fully functional windows side by side, or on multiple monitors in the same instance of AutoCAD. With floating windows, you can do your work within a split second versus waiting to open AutoCAD again and find the drawing. Now, you just click, drag, and you’re done.

Connect to Autodesk Drive and Autodesk Docs

With the AutoCAD web and mobile apps, you can access your files in the cloud. This year, we added Autodesk Drive and Autodesk Docs connections to the AutoCAD web app, so you can conveniently connect to your files within the Autodesk ecosystem. With these new integrations, you can take advantage of anytime access to any DWG file with AutoCAD.

Enhancements and improved performance

AutoCAD 2022 offers enhancements that include a faster and customizable installation letting you even work in AutoCAD while the program is being installed. With the new installation, the typical number of interactions to install the product has been reduced. You can also enjoy improved graphics performance and a redesigned start tab that allows you to easily access files and other helpful content directly from the home screen.
“We aim to create modern, connected workflows and harness automation to save time, improve accuracy, and enhance collaboration wherever you work,” says Marcus O’Brien, Senior Director of AutoCAD product management. “We are working to give our users an unprecedented design experience on whatever device they choose.”

3 Simple Steps to Setting up 3D Drawings in AutoCAD

3 Simple Steps to Setting up 3D Drawings in AutoCAD

Don’t laugh but, a contact of ours, who will remain nameless (for obvious reasons) was today years old when he realised AutoCAD was capable of 3D modelling. But it led us to think, how many other users are still under the impression that AutoCAD can’t do 3D?

3D is synonymous with Revit and Inventor. But AutoCAD is still very much labelled as a 2D tool as opposed to a 3D tool. So let’s take you through the top 3 tips to setting up a design for 3D in AutoCAD.

So first off.

1. Change the workspace

You have to change the workspace, and then you have to open a new file by using a 3D template. Open the Workspaces drop-down list on the Quick Access toolbar, or click the Workspace Switching button on the status bar and then choose 3D Modelling. Toolbars, palettes, and Ribbon panels will flash on and off and then AutoCAD will display the Ribbon, as configured for the 3D Modelling workspace with a few additional panels.

2. Click the Application button and choose New

Once this is done click Drawing and the Select Template dialog box will appear.

3. Finally choose your units

acad3d.dwt if you’re working in imperial units or acadiso3d.dwt if you’re working in metric. Click Open.

A 3D modelling space appears where, rather than look straight down at the drawing area, you look at it at an angle from above.

And away you go, you are now ready to start your 3D AutoCAD design.

TechTuesdays | Working with Linked Files in Autodesk Revit

Linked Files in Autodesk Revit

Transcript

Inside the Revit environment, it allows you to import a number of different types of files by linking them in. So you can link in a Revit file an IFC, link in a CAD file, topography dwf mark-ups, decal images for placing on surfaces, point cloud files such as OCP OCS, coordination models from Navisworks NWT, NWC and then manage links any sort of imported files.

So here I am within my Revit project this is the main Revit building. I’m going to select all visual elements. Thes other files are imported or linked files. To link in a file go to your insert tab under the link status, click on the link in Revit, navigate to your particular file. Select the file you want to import. This item has been linked as a Revit file. These are external files. And no items are selectable within that.

This site file is a 2d DWG and all of this is intelligent information. So if I want to navigate to the top view. If I want to trace over them, I can go to my pick lines or draw lines and it will pick up on those lines and trace over. Therefore this is not just static information.

Linked Files in Autodesk Revit

We can also control the layers within this drawing as well. So I may want to hide all the deck layers within this view.

If I go into my manage links tab, this will allow me to see what’s been imported. So I can see which model has been imported and I can unload that and remove it. It still retains any of the external walls we traced over. This hasn’t disappeared with the CAD file.

In the 3D view, we can see the files from different views and these are editable within the original files.

10 things you need to know about the AutoCAD Web App

AutoCAD Web App overview transcript

Hello, my name is Paul Hewitt, and today we’re going to have a look at the AutoCAD Web app. But firstly, why use the AutoCAD Web app? Well, it means anywhere access when you’re outside of the office, doesn’t matter what machine you use, it doesn’t matter what’s installed on that machine. All you need is Internet access and to use a Web browser. So quite simply, the AutoCAD Web app lets you view, edit and create all in a browser, and anywhere.

Here are the 10 things you need to know about the AutoCAD Web App.

1. Visual Fidelity

The Web interface looks exactly the same as your desktop interface. As you can see here side by side, we’ve got the Web app on the left-hand side and your normal AutoCAD view on the right-hand side, the drawing itself looks exactly the same. OK, some of the icons may be slightly different, but pretty much the same as what you’d be using on the desktop. Signing in couldn’t be any simpler. Just choose your favourite browser, head off towards web.auotcad.com and sign in using your Autodesk ID.

The Web app interface makes it so much easier – file management, including uploading, creating new folders and drawings and even the recognisable icons. You’re drafting tools are all there –  arcs, lines and circles, pylons and even hatching. In the annotates section, you can use the measuring tools, revision clouds dimension up your drawings and Mtext and Mleader is all there. And obviously, we need to modify our drawings and as you can see it is an extensive list of modification commands.

2.  Cloud-based Storage

Not just your Autodesk drive, but Dropbox Box, Google Drive and one drive, all of the icons are there, you just select which ones you want to add and it’ll be added to your storage.

3. Easy access to model and layout tabs

Just create new layouts to meet your needs. In the app, you can move swiftly between views, whether they be model tabs or layout tabs. In the same position, we’ve also got properties, select an item and see all of the properties.

4. Command line

your trusty command line is there exactly the same as if it’s in the desktop for you. So just like on your desktop as you type it will suggest the command you’re expecting. Keyboard shortcuts work exactly the same, escape, undo and more.

5. Layers

They are all there, you have the ability to lock your layers. Turn your lights on or off. Creating new layers couldn’t be easier, just select the ‘create new’ and give the name of the layer.

All the settings are easy to get to – just underneath the icon in the top right. All your drafting settings down at the bottom of the screen coordinates, OSNAPs, ORTHO, polar etc.

6. SNAP overrides

We all need to override those object SNAPs – right-click on your mouse to set them.

7. Blocks and Xreferences

We all need these. The block palette, as you see, in AutoCAD on the desktop, is also available in the Web app. Xreference support, just like as you do on the desktop.

8. Move smoothly between all of the applications.

You can move your drawings between web, mobile and desktop really simply. Saving back to your desktop is just as easy, you save or save us and save back to web and mobile and save to your cloud provider.

9. Communicate with others, plot to PDF

10. it’s all part of your AutoCAD subscription

Just log in web.AutoCAD.com using your Autodesk ID.

TechTuesday – AutoCAD Keyboard Shortcuts

AutoCAD shortcuts

Transcript

In this video, we are going to look at shortcuts in AutoCAD. From a new drawing if you click on the manage tab and then find CUI on the customisation panel we are able to go and click on keyboard shortcuts.

From here we can copy these or we can simply hit print and save these as a PDF and you can now review all of the standard keyboard shortcuts. Whatsmore, we can add to these keyboard shortcuts.

Adding AutoCAD shortcuts

So if we expand our keyboard shortcuts I can then have a look at all the shortcuts that exist and I can go and grab any command and drag it into this list. In this instance, we are going to choose 3D DWF. Now this 3D DWF doesn’t have a short cut assigned to it yet. To assign a shortcut, we click on the three dots and then assign a key. In this instance, I’m going to use Control Shift and 3 and you will see that has added in and hit apply.

So from here we can print these back out and if we have a look at our PDF we can now that 3D DWF and control shift 3 is the shortcut.
